Davidson plum - produces pleasantly sour red-fleshed fruits that are high in antioxidants and vitamins. A slender tree native to the rainforest regions of subtropical NSW. Widely cultivated by domestic and commercial gardeners it is considered endangered in the wild. It produce large and purple, fruit resembling European plums in appearance. Prolific between November to February, with individual trees capable of producing many kilos of plums.
Use: nor known to be eaten fresh but great excellent stewed, preserved or made into jam. Some say you should double the amount of sugar that you would use in such a recipe.
Containing more antioxidants than the blueberry, which is known worldwide for health benefits. It also contains potassium, lutein (a compound important for eye health), vitamin E, folate, zinc, magnesium and calcium.
It is best to eat the skin as well as the flesh of the fruit as the skin contains most of the nutrients
Care instructions: It needs protection from full sun, frost and wind when young, but is suitable in full sun and part shade at maturity.
